An orthodontist or dentist typically recommend braces for the improvement of a patient’s appearance. By receiving this orthodontic treatment, dental problems such as incorrect jaw position, crowded or crooked teeth, jaw joint disorders, and underbites or overbites can be corrected. When these problems are ignored, they can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, problem chewing or biting, or speaking, as well as earaches and headaches.
Types of Braces
There are several different types of braces available. Your orthodontist will discuss each option and help you decide which one is best for you. They include:
* Metal Braces – Stainless steel, least expensive option, but are extremely visible. Runner bands hold a thin wire in place allowing them to move your teeth where desired due to the pressure put upon them.
* Ceramic Braces – Slightly more expensive than metal braces, and less visible. Patients have a choice of white metal ties or elastic to keep them in place on your teeth. Ceramic braces require more time and maintenance than metal braces.
* Lingual Braces – Attached behind your teeth allowing them to stay hidden, lingual braces use the same wires and metal brackets as traditional braces. However, because of the more complex placement procedure, these braces are costlier than ceramic or metal braces.
* Invisalign Brace – More expensive than other options of braces, Invisalign are basically invisible. These braces cover the teeth entirely with clear plastic tray aligners. Invisalign is removable which allows patients to eat and brush without the worry of their braces. Every two weeks the clear plastic tray aligners are replaced. These types of braces are recommended for teens and adult only.
Length of Time Needed
The amount of time you will need to wear braces will depend on your treatment plan from the orthodontist. Generally, treatment plans are longer if you are older or for more complicated dental problems. The majority of patients need to wear braces between 12-18 months.
